Home of the Jade Monkey lost

The recent loss of the former City Steam Biscuit Factory on Twin Street (most recently operating as the Jade Monkey live music venue) has highlighted the failings of current approaches to heritage protection in South Australia. Despite being heritage listed in a last ditch bid to save the building, the former factory and Balfours Cafe was demolished at the end of 2012. The case of the City Steam Biscuit factory serves as a reminder of the limits of the current heritage protection system.
